There’s always so much going on that many ask us, “What to see in Hawaii?”

Here’s some highlights of what’s happening in the next few days… Of course you all know it’s Easter this Sunday, right? What will YOU be doing?

Tonight, March 30 starting at 7pm (FREE) at the MACC – Art=MIXX Forest – a free artistic event with food, music, fun and laughs! Come join us! More information here.

Saturday, April 6th is not only Buddha Day, but out at the Maui Country Club you can come join in the fun for the Jim Sanders Realty Maui Women’s Golf Championship! Entry fees are only $60! More information here.

Sunday April 7th from 7-9am is the 2nd Annual Maui 5K! This is a 5K run and 1 mile keiki run/walk starting at the Ma’alaea Triangle.  Part of the proceeds from this event will be given back to the schools participating in the event.  The 5k event is chip timed and the 1mile run/walk is a fun, untimed event. Monday, April 8th, 6pm – want to try something different? Come check out the FREE Oscar-nominated documentary screening of “5 Broken Cameras” at the Maui College. The film is a first-hand account of struggle and resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village affected by the Israeli West Bank barrier that cut off the villagers from their farmlands and is co-sponsored by Maui Peace Action, the Hawaiian Studies Department and UH Maui College Peace Club. Los Lonely Boys will be playing at the MACC this weekend – a band of brothers playing a style of music they call “Texican Rock-and-Roll”. Their last big hit was “heaven” back in 2004 – hit #1 on the Billboards and since then they’ve been going strong. Visit the MACC for tickets.

March 2

The Wailea Maui Resort & Spa will be hosting the Hale Kau Kau’s 14th Annual Fundraiser Pa`ina this weekend – March 2. Live music, good fun and lots of fun.  Call 808-875-8754 for more information and tickets.

March 3
Generations: Lindsey Ohana the women of the Lindsey ohana, mother Carmen Hulu and daughters Kahulu Maluo and Napua Makua, embody Hawaiian music in all its forms. Hulu Lindsey, best known for her rich falsetto styling, has performed worldwide for the past 40 years. 7:30pm at Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului. Tickets $30. Call 808-242-7469.

March 8
Olomana by Moonlight blends contemporary and traditional musical styles to create a distinct sound that is deeply rooted in the land, people and culture of Hawaii. Tickets: $30/standard, $45/premium table seating, $55/VIP experience on Morgado Lanai. 7:30pm at the MACC in Kahului. Call 808-242-7469.

March 9
Jake Shimabukuro is famous for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques on the ukulele. Jake was declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone magazine and has earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis and performed for the Queen of England. Tickets: $12, $35, $45. 7:30pm at the MACC in Kahului. Call 808-242-7469.

March 10
Pidgin: The Voice of Hawaii this film profiles the language of Hawaii’s working people in its rise from plantation jargon to a source of island identity, pride and controversy. Tickets: $10. 3pm-6pm at the MACC in Kahului. Call 808-242-7469.

Events in Hawaii – Maui this week!

With so many events in Hawaii, we like to try to provide you with a few highlights you might not want to miss.  This month was Chinese New Year as well Valentines Day so there’s been plenty of local activity. Coming to the end of February, here are the highlights for the rest of the month that you may not want to miss out on!

Events in HawaiiThis Friday’s Maui Town Party – Kihei Fourth Fridays will be this Friday from 6-9pm at the Azeka  Shopping Center in Kihei! Live bands include GOMEGA, Bad Kitty and the Lion Dance too celebrate Chinese New Year! More than 80 vendors will be out there sharing the aloha! The Keiki Zone will have a Chinese New Year Costume Contest and plenty of free activities. Stella Blues and Diamonds will have additional entertainment! We’ll be out there photographing the event, so find us and say hi so we can get your picture in for this month!

Let’s not forget that the Maui Pride is hosting a Whaleabration Cruise this Saturday, February 23 from 3-5:30! At last count there were only 9 tickets left so if you’re interested in this special event, you need to go to the Maui Pride Website and get your tickets! We hope to see you out there (and plenty of whales too!)

Events in MauiIf you’re unable to make the whale cruise but want to help participate in Maui’s whale adventures – please contact  Betsy at the Pacific Whale Foundation (betsydavidson@pacificwhale.org). She is in charge of gathering as many individuals as she can to help in the Great Humpback Whale Count from the shores of Maui – help out as you spend a beautiful day on the beach!

Saturday night, the Hui is having their signature fundraising event at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center – “The Art Affair”. Support the local art community, enjoy live music, dancing, gourmet dinner and open bar. How can you go wrong? Go to their website for tickets and more information.

On Sunday, February 23, don’t miss the Ka Lima O Maui Golf Tournament at one of our favorite local courses – Elleair Golf Course. Raising money for charity and playing golf? What a great combination! Go here for more details and sign up! Play starts at 7:30am!

For those concert goers – don’t miss SANTANA – playing February 28th at 7:30pm at the MACC. Tickets range from $65-$129.

Events in Hawaii – Maui This Week!

There are some wonderful events in Hawaii happening in the next week -check these Maui events out!

Maui Whale DayIf you haven’t heard already – tomorrow, Saturday February 16th,  is MAUI WHALE DAY! The kickoff parade will begin at 9am on South Kihei Rd near Kamaole 2 Park and will run North.  Grab your bicycles or tennis shoes and go green to the event! The main party will be held at Kalama Park starting at 10am. Parking will be a zoo so the more that can carpool or come by alternate means, the better. There will be rows and rows of vendors and hours of entertainment including Erin Smith and the Throwdowns on the mainstage. Bring a chair and enjoy people watching – there’ll be thousands to choose from!

This Sunday, NOAA will be hosting a number of activities and events this weekend including the movie “Undersea Discoveries” from 7:30pm to 9:00pm at Whaler’s Village. This is an excellent opportunity to share the underwater adventure with your children – as a local or visitor! A great way to explore the deep without ever getting wet (ok, unless it rains… )

Tuesday, February 19th is free movie night at the Kihei Public Library. This week they’re showing MOONSTRUCK from 6-7:45. Bring the family and enjoy this free event!

February 22 – Friday – mark your calendars – Kihei Fourth Friday is where you want to be! Performances by GOMEGA and Bad Kitty with a special performance of the Lion Dance to celebrate the Chinese New Year! There will be a costume contest for the kids in the Keiki Zone so dress them up cute! With more than 25 food vendors, 60 merchandise and services booths and a huge Keiki Zone, you won’t be bored! New vendors rotate in frequently to keep everyone entertained! Come check it out – 6-9 pm!

February 10th, 5:30 don’t miss Hawaii Canines for Independence’s 5th Annual Valentine’s Benefit Event & Auction being held at Gannon’s in Wailea. The event will feature cuisine from Chef Bev Gannon, live music, silent auction. $150 per ticket going to a great cause!

Things to do in Maui – January 16-26

Don’t forget that Thursday’s are KABOOM!! Part nights at Casanovas in Makawao. Every Thursday night is Reggae Thursday with DJs creating a dance atmosphere from 9:30-1:30. $5 before 10am and $10 after – come check out the Reggae Fun!

This Friday it’ll be up in Makawao celebrating its theme of “Makawao Gets Fit & Healthy” and next Friday it’ll be back down in Kihei continuing its celebration of “Kihei Makahiki” Both parties run 6-9pm.  More information can be found at mauifridays.com

With so many things to do in Maui, how about something special for our youth? This Friday, January 17th, the Boys and Girls Club is sponsoring a dance for youth ages 9-17 from 7pm to 10pm at the Eddie Tam Gym in Makawao featuring music by the Chilltown Productions. Registration begins at 6pm and cost is a $4 donation.

Want to give something back to the land of Maui? How about participating in the Haleakla Service Trip this weekend? Hike into the crater with a team and spend a few days caring for the land under guidance – you need to be able to trek in your own sleeping bag, personal items and share of food. The nights will be spent at Paliku Cabin… January 19-21 – why not spend them in a crater? Call 808-264-4757 for more information.

Sunday, January 20th – one of the best things to do in Maui – The Maui Oceanfront Marathon! Start ini Wailea and end up in Lahaina. Enoy fabulous views along the way but don’t get distracted by the whales spouting! Visit their website for more information.

Next Monday will be incredible – don’t miss Castle Theater’s New Shanghai Circus! These Chinese Acrobats are amazing! There will be 2 shows on Monday and 1 on Tuesday. Go to their website to learn more! Hope to see you there!

January 25th provides  another fun thing to do in Maui – the monthly Hawaiian Moonlight Concert at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku. Bring your blanket or low back chairs and enjoy an evening of Hawaiian music under the moon and stars. Show starts at 6pm and goes until 9pm. Tickets are $15 for members and $25 for non-members.

There are some great things to do in Maui this week that you won’t want to miss!

 

What to do in LahainaTuesday and Wednesday this week, January 8th and 9th at the Lahaina Cannery Mall they will be offering FREE Polynesian shows at 7pm by the Pineapple Food Court. Come check it out!

On Wed, Jan 9th at the Napili Kai Beach Resort pavilion the Masters of Hawaiian Music Series will be happening featuring musicians from the 22 Grammy winning album, “Masters of Hawaiian slack Key Guitar Concert Series” Show starts at 7:30. Call 808-669-3858 for more information.

There’s more FREE entertainment happening on Thursday, January 10 at the Center Stage- Whaler’s Village in Kaanapali. Check out the Polynesian hula, keiki hula and Tahitian dance displays from 7-8pm.

For those on the South Side this week, don’t miss the Wailea Sand Sculpture Competition on Friday, January 10th, open to all ages, residents and visitors alike. Local artists Riki and Tom Inzano will be offering advice and guidance based on their years of experience creating amazing sand sculptures. Sand Sculpture Event starts at 10 am. This Friday night, January 10th, Lahaina is offering a number of free events –the Lahaina Art Night from 7-10pm along Front Street with artists displaying their work and some stores offering drinks and pupus as well as the Lahaina Second Friday Town Party from 6-9 pm with 8 choices of live entertainment and even more choices of food! Welcome to 2013! As is expected of Maui, there are plenty of events going on. Here’s the highlights for the week:

If you’re looking for a reason to get outside and get some fresh air – how about a Charity Golf Tournament? Kapalua’s Plantation Course has a charity golf tournament on January 3. Contact danielchelel@pgatourhq.com for more information!

Not wanting to exert much energy? Country Singer, Steve Zuwala will be playing at the MACC on January 4th performing a Country Rock Special benefiting the Maui Food Bank. You can get your tickets online at http://www.mauiarts.org/events/steve-zuwala/  but seating is limited.

If you’d like to get outdoors with the family, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary is hosting a Ko`ie`ie Fishpond 5K Fun Run & Kids Mile event on January 5th beginning at their center in Kihei, South Maui. Call for more information: 808-280-5801.

Also on January 5th, Haunani Apoliona, Ku‘uipo Kumukahi & Helene Woodward will be performing at the McCoy Studio Theater ini Kahalui at 7:30 pm. Come listen to the amazing 12-string guitar and relax for an evening of Hawaiian fun! More information can be found here.

What to do on Maui – second half of December 2012

With the holidays upon us, many locals have gone to the Mainland for the holidays while many Mainlanders have come to Maui. This shift in people causes quite a stir here on the island. Regularly scheduled events tend to get postponed until January and in their places are holiday themed events.

But once again  this year, it’s not only a time to celebrate, but also a time to remember.  If you can make the time, visit Wailuku tomorrow morning for a Walk in Remembrance – “Walk 27” is set to honor and remember the 27 victims of last Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.  Participants are asked to meet at War Memorial Stadium at 4:15 a.m. We will begin walking around the track promptly at 4:30AM and continue for 27 minutes. Participants are encouraged to wear Green & White – the school colors of Sandy Hook Elementary School. In lieu of a balloon release, we encourage individuals & families to bring bubbles to remind us of the innocent lives lost in this tragedy. For more information, call Brian Nagami at 264-0464.

How about trying your body at yoga?  Ashtanga Yoga Maui Mysore Style (overlooking  Paia) offers free yoga classes each Wednesday from 4:30-5:30. This might be a great opportunity to see if you like it, especially since it’s FREE… find out more information here and please send pictures if you are trying it for the first time! 🙂

If you’re looking for culture this Christmas, why not check out the Hawaiian Music Series featuring the Na Hoku Hanohano nominated music group, “Kulewa”,  happening on December 27th at the Baldwin Home Museum? This FREE Concert is made possible by The Lahaina Restoration Foundation… bring your low-back chairs & blankets and sit under the stars and relax this holiday season!  Get more information here.

And on a final note before we look at events in the new year – how about a New Year’s Eve Party to benefit the Maui Hospice, “Maui’s Countdown to 2013!”? Party will be held at the King Kamehameha Golf Club, Waikapu Ballroom from 6:30 – 12:30 December 31. Tickets are only $60!
